What a horrific scene
as we saw maggots coming out of a woman’s leg. A tourist who went to the Amazon returned home
only to find that maggots were still in her leg.
Two maggots, both still alive and wriggling, had to be pulled from her leg by medics.
Workers at the
hospital helped the 28-year-old after she had returned from a South American
holiday.
Identified only by
her surname, Gu, was treated at Longhua Hospital, connected
with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Bitten in Brazil,
the Chinese backpacker trekked to Bolivia and other Amazonian basin countries.
Ms Gu was bitten
by a ‘peanut-size insect’ or a human botfly.
Leaving three
lumps on her leg, she claims they itched for hours after she swatted the fly
away.
Despite finishing
her backpacking adventure, she began to feel intense itching when she arrived
back in China.
It was only when
the lumps split open and the maggot burst from her skin.
Treating her with
antibiotics, medics removed two more of the bugs which had not quite hatched.
Despite being
traumatised Ms Gu is said to be in a stable condition.
